I didnât feel up to looking after Tansy and Aleks. I just wanted to curl up in a ball somewhere dark and quiet. I knew I had to call Donna. I had nobody else.
I picked up my phone, and for a moment I couldnât remember what I needed to do. I opened up my call list and jabbed a finger on a contact. Donna picked up after two rings.
âHi, Kate, can I call you back? Iâve just put Paulâs tea on andââ
âMichaelâs gone,â I whispered. âHeâs dead, Donna.â
âWhat?â
âHe went out and ⦠and ⦠A lorry ⦠The police came here to tell me. Heâs dead.â
âMy God, no!â She fell silent for a few seconds, and then she called out to Paul, âIâve got to go, can you come in here, babe?â She muffled the phone and I heard her speaking urgently in a low voice. âOK, Kate, Iâm on my way. Iâll be at yours in five minutes. Get the kidsâ stuff together. They can have a sleepover with Ellie tonight.â
She ended the call and I sat staring at the wall. I felt numb. Spaced out.
âMummy!â Tansy yelled from the top of the stairs. âWhen are you coming up?â
âIâm coming up now,â I mumbled under my breath. Michael was going to come home and read them both a story. Heâd put them to bed and then come downstairs and pour us some wine. Weâd talk about the police interview and heâd tell me everything would be fine, and Iâd say I was sorry for thinking the worst and â¦
Someone was shaking me. âMummy, Mummy! Whatâs wrong? Why are you talking to yourself?â I refocused, saw Tansyâs tearful eyes and worried expression.
âItâs OK, darling, you and Aleks get your coats and shoes on. Youâre going to stay at Ellieâs house tonight.â
âWhat?â She punched her hands to her hips. âWeâre already ready for bed!â
âCan I go back to the cottage?â Aleks said hopefully.
âNo. No,â I said vaguely. âGet ready.â
âWhatâs wrong with your mum?â I heard him whisper.
âGrab your coat, Tansy,â I said, pulling myself together. âAleks, you too. Put them on over your pyjamas. It will be fun.â
âIt wonât be fun because Ellie doesnât like Aleks,â Tansy said crossly, folding her arms. âShe might not let him play in her bedroom with us.â
There was a knock on the door and Donna walked in. She headed straight for me and embraced me. It took every ounce of my resolve not to collapse sobbing into her.
âThe kids donât know yet,â I whispered into her ear.
âOK, kids, grab your stuff. Iâm taking you to my house and then Iâm coming back to look after your mum, Tansy. Sheâs not feeling too well.â
âDonna, please. I donât want to ruin your night, thereâs no need to come back.â
âIâm coming right back here,â she said firmly. âPaul will sort the kids out.â
âIâll manage, Iâll â¦â I couldnât seem to focus, to finish my thoughts. Michaelâs face filled my mind in technicolour.
I grabbed on to a chair and squeezed my eyes closed.
